What is your Skin Type

Ever wonder what skin type you have? There are four basic skin types: normal, dry, oily and combination. Understanding the different types of skin and which one you have will help give you a better idea of how to treat acne breakouts and achieve smooth, clear skin.

Your skin type is usually determined by genetics, but there are daily habits and environmental factors that can worsen a skin condition. Each skin type has a specific set of characteristics and symptoms, and requires special attention. Keep reading to find out about your personal skin type and how to best care for it.

1. Normal Skin

Normal Skin

Not too dry and not too oily, normal skin has:

  • No or few imperfections
  • No severe sensitivity
  • Barely visible pores
  • A radiant complexion

2. Oily Skin

Oily Skin

Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands (oil gland) in the skin make too much sebum (oil). Sebum is the waxy, oily substance that protects and hydrates the skin.

With oily skin, you may have:

  • Enlarged pores
  • Dull or shiny, thick complexion
  • Blackheads, pimples, or other blemishes

3. Dry Skin

Dry Skin

Dry skin type is that which produces less sebum (oil) than normal skin. As a result of the lack of sebum (oil), dry skin lacks the lipids (oil) that it needs to retain moisture and build a protective shield against external influences. Dry skin can feel tight and rough and look dull.

With Dry skin you may have:

  • Almost invisible pores
  • Dull, rough complexion
  • Red patches
  • Your skin is less elastic
  • More visible lines

4. Combination Skin

Combination Skin

Your skin can be dry or normal in some areas and oily in others, such as the T-zone (nose, forehead, and chin). Many people have this type. It may need slightly different care in different areas.

Combination skin can have:

  • Pores that look larger than normal, because they’re more open
  • Blackheads
  • Shiny skin
